In 1984, MHI delivered its first large-scale combined cycle power plant with over 50% thermal efficiency for Higashi Nigata Power Station.
We are now one of the world-leaders in the design, manufacture, and supply of combined cycle power plants. This technology uses gas and steam turbines together with a heat recovery steam generator (waste heat boiler) to generate electricity more efficiently and with reduced carbon emissions.
By using exhaust gas from the gas turbine to generate the electricity, GTCC power plants are much more efficient than conventional boiler steam turbine plants.
The new J-series gas turbine when applied in combined cycle plants will build on these efficiencies, emitting up to half as much CO2 as conventional coal-fired power generation. MHI combined cycle technology is making a significant contribution to worldwide efforts to reduce global warming.
